Paul Rooney Liverpool Solicitors: Number of Drivers Wearing Seatbelts Increases
The number of drivers in England and Scotland wearing seatbelts has increased in the last twelve months.
The survey, carried out by the Department for Transport, revealed that around 96 per cent of road users in 2009 wore their seatbelts whilst driving, up one per cent from the previous year.
The survey also revealed that the number of rear seat passengers wearing seatbelts had risen by two per cent in 2009, with 90 per cent of passengers using seatbelts during journeys.
However, the number of front seat passengers using seatbelts had decreased slightly, dropping from 96 per cent in 2008 to 95 per cent in 2009.
The Department of Transport also quizzed drivers about their mobile phone usage whilst on the roads. They found that handheld mobile phone usage amongst car drivers had increased by 0.3 per cent, with 1.4 per cent of drivers admitting to using handheld devices whilst driving. Van and lorry drivers using mobile phones had increased to 2.6 per cent.
Using a handheld mobile phone device whilst driving is illegal in Britain, and could result in an on-the-spot fine and points on your license.
The use of hands-free kits with mobile phones whilst on the road, which all road users are urged to do, rose significantly in 2009. Around 1.4 per cent of car drivers use a hands-free kit, up from 0.5 per cent in 2008, while 2.4 per cent of van and lorry drivers also use hands-free devices, up from 1.1 per cent the previous year.
