Twelve Percent of Merseyside Drivers Are Uninsured
Around twelve percent of Liverpool’s drivers are hitting the road without insurance, it has been revealed.
According to new figures released by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau on Thursday (24/09), Merseyside came second only to Greater London for the highest number of uninsured vehicles. The report estimates that over 1.7million people were driving without insurance across Britain in 2008.
MIB chief executive Ashton West described the figures as “staggering”. He said: “There is no doubt that the number of drivers caught each year is increasing significantly, so drivers simply cannot afford to be complacent.”
Driving without insurance is illegal in the UK, and the minimum punishment for offenders is six penalty points on your licence and a £200 fine. Up to 500 uninsured vehicles are seized by police every day.
Phil Waters of the Paul Rooney Partnership has an active caseload in the Road Traffic Accident department, and handles cases involving uninsured drivers on a daily basis. He said: “People are understandably shaken following an accident but they should always try to obtain as much information as possible from the driver responsible such as name, address, telephone number, make and model of the vehicle, registration number and insurance details.
“If there is any possibility that the other driver may be uninsured, or something does not seem quite right, then it is vital that the matter is reported to the Police as soon as possible and an incident number obtained.”
The Motor Insurers’ Bureau offers compensation for those who have been involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, and Phil Waters says more people should be made aware of this: “Just because the other driver may be uninsured, they are still entitled to pursue a claim for personal injury.”
