Road Traffic Accident

A Northumberland town centre was brought to a standstill after an air ambulance landed on its high street to rescue a 91-year-old man.

Pilot Ross Wadham guided his helicopter between houses and shops to touch down in the middle of Marygate in Berwick.

Police cordoned off the road moments before and about 100 shoppers watched the landing on Monday afternoon.

The pensioner, who suffered leg and chest injuries in a road traffic accident, was then flown to hospital.

His personal injuries, which happened when he was blown into the path of a van by high winds, were described as non-life threatening.

As expected, road and traffic accidents will typically occur more often in bad weather, particularly throughout the winter months, and pensioners are more at risk due to slips, trips and general falls.
