Huge Rise in British Troops Claiming Compensation
A report today claims that over 14 thousand British troops have claimed compensation for injuries incurred while at war. The shock number was unearthed by national newspaper the Daily Mirror. The Daily Mirror also stated that the public fears that casualties are escalating out of control in Afghanistan.
Among those who have claimed, 279 have been told that they should appeal their amount awarded, as they are believed to be too low. The number of claims comes spans back to April 2005 when the government first brought in the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme. Its certain that the number of claims would be dramatically higher had the scheme been brought in as early as 2001 when the armed forces began duties in Afghanistan as well as the war in Iraq beginning in 2003.
A senior defence source said “these figures lay bare for the first time, the real cost of our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq."
“The number of claims will continue to grow as our casualties increase."
“It beggars belief that those struggling with appalling injuries inflicted while serving their country in Afghanistan and Iraq then have to fight for every penny of compensation.”
Meanwhile the number of casualties in the Helmand Province has continued to rise. In July there were 94 soldiers injured while on duty, with 19 labelled as “very serious”. It’s obvious that as the fighting continues the injuries will increase.
